State
of Ohio / State Architect's Office
Craig Weise, AIA, CCM, PMP, State Architect
Craig Weise began serving as the State Architect on Oct. 1, 2007. His more than 20 years of experience in the design and construction industry covering a wide range of building types and scales of projects, along with his prior government experience with the Ohio School Facilities Commission, will provide strong leadership and customer orientation for the State Architect’s Office (SAO) as it continues its commitment to provide unequalled, centralized management of capital improvement projects for Ohio government.
Prior to leading SAO, Craig worked at the Ohio School Facilities Commission, serving as interim chief of projects, deputy chief of projects and a project administrator. The commission administers the state’s comprehensive K-12 public school construction program, one of the nation’s largest capital improvement programs of its kind. During his tenure, he has been involved with managing the $1 billion per year OSFC construction program, negotiating and contracting construction management services, and auditing OSFC contractors for contract compliance.
SAO, which comprises more than 30 staff members, establishes the procedures and policies for management of virtually all state-funded design and construction capital projects, except K-12 schools. SAO also manages projects for state agencies, boards, commissions and institutions by request. In addition to these primary functions, its Interior Design Services section provides space planning services and design of interior environments for state agencies, boards and commissions. Further, its Office of Energy Services provides assessment and auditing, energy-responsive design and contracting opportunities promoting the efficient use of energy resources in state facilities.
Craig holds several degrees and accreditations. He received an associate’s degree from Alpena Community College in Alpena, Mich., where he was raised and started his career in construction. Craig later received a bachelor’s degree in architecture from Lawrence Technological University in Southfield, Mich. He also earned master’s degrees in architecture and engineering from the University of Michigan and remains a Wolverine fan. After moving to Wisconsin, Craig received his Master of Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin in Madison.
Craig is a member the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and Project Management Institute (PMI), where he received the distinction of Project Management Professional (PMP). Craig is active in the Construction Management Association of America and has served as a board member and chapter president and currently is serving as the past president of the Northern Ohio Chapter. Craig achieved the accreditation of Certified Construction Manager (CCM) through the Construction Management Association of America.
Craig holds architectural licenses in Ohio and Wisconsin and a National Council of Architectural Review Boards certificate.
