State fleet reduced 12 percent
-- GSD Office of Fleet Management, February 2005

A cooperative effort among state agencies' fleet managers and the GSD Office of Fleet Management has resulted in a 12 percent reduction of vehicles under DAS authority.

Fleet Management, which is responsible for reducing the state's light vehicle fleet of automobiles, sport utility vehicles, passenger vans and pickup trucks, has cut that portion of the state fleet from 6,874 to 6,052 for a reduction of 822 vehicles or 12 percent, saving taxpayers $1.56 million per year.

In addition, Fleet Management has created several management tools to help state agencies manage their fleets. These include:

  • Fleet plan guidelines for agencies to develop strategic fleet
plans that will outline long- and short-range methods to
        improve vehicle effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Mileage break-even guidelines to determine when it is
less expensive to reimburse an employee at 30 cents a
mile for using their personal vehicle rather than a vehicle     from the state fleet.
  • A fleet management information system, called FleetOhio,
that facilitates state agencies' analysis of vehicle costs and
        utilization.

  • A gubernatorial executive order and legislative mandates have helped DAS strengthen the state fleet management program.
