Chief Legal Counsel Archie
lectures at Oxford

-- DAS Administrative Support Division, June 2005

DAS Chief Legal Counsel Deborah Archie's expertise on human rights has been acknowledged internationally.

Archie was invited to present her paper about the origins of human rights at Oxford University in Oxford, England.

Speaking at the Oxford Education Round Table in March, Archie shared her paper: "Breach of Covenant: A Restatement of the Natural Law Theory of the Origins of Rights."

The Oxford Round Table is a forum for select leaders in the public and private sectors and scholars to discuss government policy during a five-day period in a collegial "think-tank" atmosphere. The results of the dialogues, which began in 1989, have been published and distributed throughout the world. For more information about the Oxford Round Tables, visit http://www.oxfordroundtable.co.uk/new.htm.

Archie was among 26 delegates, all Americans, presenting papers at the round table, which focused on women's rights.

Archie was among the first to speak, allowing for a general discussion of the origins of human rights before specific aspects of women's rights were addressed by other delegates.

Her paper explores the source of universal rights and values and postulates that a return to a philosophy of natural rights will restore an essential moral compass for the United States and the world.

Back in the states Archie's knowledge is an asset to DAS where she shares her expertise in employment and civil service law. Her accomplishments include being instrumental in developing EDGE (Encouraging Diversity, Growth and Equity), a new State of Ohio development program for economically and socially disadvantaged businesses.

Archie has worked for the State of Ohio for 19 years, spending the last 16 years with DAS. The Columbus native earned her bachelor's degree from Columbia University and her Juris Doctorate from Emory University.
