Young people visit DAS

-DAS Office of Employee Services, September 2006

More than 50 young people experienced working at DAS as they shadowed adult relatives and friends during Bring Your Child to Work Day on Aug. 4.

Highlights of the visitors’ day included various tours and a chance for them to glimpse firsthand a typical workday at DAS.

All of the young people visiting DAS in the Rhodes Tower and at the General Services Division were welcomed by DAS Director Carol Nolan Drake and presented with a certificate of participation.

Young people visiting the General Services Division participated in a facility tour, a mock-interview process and toured the main copy center at State Printing. The GSD event was coordinated by Rosanna Muse-Duffy of GSD Office of Employee Services.

A Statehouse tour was one of the attractions for youths visiting the Human Resources Division. The HRD group was coordinated by Karen Bickmeier of the HRD Deputy Director’s Office.

Young people visiting the Administrative Support Division toured the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s facilities in the Rhodes Tower and met Nitro, a bomb-detecting dog who demonstrated how the highway patrol uses dogs to search for bombs and explosives.

The ASD group also toured Columbus City Hall and got a behind-the-scenes look at the studio where the Columbus City Council meetings are televised. They also toured State Mail Services at the Rhodes Tower and were given a demonstration of the X-ray and metering machines used to process mail. The ASD group was coordinated by Victoria Yarborough of DAS Office of Employee Services.

The Equal Opportunity Division had one visitor who shadowed his father during the morning. The EOD event was coordinated by Bobbi Bell of the EOD Deputy Director’s Office.

Bring Your Child to Work Day is a national event that encourages youths to experience a day in the workday of their parent or another adult and give youths an opportunity to learn about future career opportunities.
