OGRIP awarded federal grant
-- SDD Enterprise Shared Services, October 2005

The Ohio Geographically Referenced Information Program has been awarded a $50,000 Cooperative Agreement Program grant from the U.S. Geological Survey to support spatial data coordination efforts in Ohio.

The grant will be used to help create cross-governmental geographic information system (GIS) data sharing protocols, agreements and technology enablers in support of national initiatives, such as the National Spatial Data Infrastructure and The National Map. The National Map is a collection of geographic information, such as road center lines and aerial imagery, that provides a spatial framework for displaying other spatial datasets in support of better decision making.

The grant also will support Ohio’s Location-Based Response System (LBRS) – a program to develop a high accuracy centerline and addresses in support of economic development, homeland security and emergency response as well as other spatial data program initiatives. Through the LBRS, OGRIP is developing partnerships with all 88 Ohio counties.

Partnering with local government will solidify future functionality and allow for more efficient data sharing among all levels of government.

Ohio was one of 10 state programs selected for this funding out of 22 submittals in the category of geographic information integration and analysis. The purpose of this category is to provide assistance to organizations and consortia that maintain, update and make data available in collaboration with the National Geospatial Program Office and The National Map.

OGRIP serves as the authorized coordinating body for spatial and geographic information initiatives among federal, state, regional and local governments in Ohio.
