Outpouring of donors leads to DAS
blood drive success
-- DAS Office of Employee Services, October 2007

Continued involvement and commitment to Red Cross blood donation programs by the Ohio Department of Administrative Services led to the agency being honored by the American Red Cross-Central Ohio Region.

DAS was presented with a recognition plaque at a Sept. 21 banquet for its participation in the 2007 Life Sharing Challenge.

DAS placed second among 24 participating state agencies in the state government category with 306 total points, only behind the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services which earned 541 points for its blood drives. This was the third time DAS has placed in the top three among state agencies (2002, 2005 and 2007).

The Life Sharing Challenge, now in its 20th year, was held from July 1, 2006, through June 30.

Participating organizations were awarded points for a number of factors, including points for blood drives held the workday before or after a holiday, for the number of first-time donors and for a drive held with less than a week’s notice.

DAS, which has hosted Red Cross blood drives since 1991, sponsored 10 last year -- four at the Rhodes Tower and six at the General Services Division at 4200 Surface Road, collecting 196 units of whole blood. The Red Cross strives to collect 200,000 units of blood each year in central Ohio.

Jane Baughn, a personnel officer with the DAS Office of Employee Services and the coordinator for DAS-sponsored blood drives in the Rhodes Tower, said DAS is fortunate to have many regular blood donors. “We’ve just got a good group of core donors who try to give as often as they can.”

There were 99 distinct donors from DAS during the Life Sharing Challenge drive, according to Rodney Wilson, communications supervisor for the American Red Cross-Central Ohio Blood Services.

Upcoming DAS blood drives will be held Oct. 24 and Dec. 19 at the GSD headquarters and Dec. 17 in the Rhodes Tower Blood Donor Center, which is located on the 18th floor. For more information or to schedule an appointment to donate, contact Steve Morbitzer via e-mail at steve.morbitzer@das.state.oh.us or phone (614) 466-0530 for the GSD drives, or Jane Baughn of DAS Employee Services at jane.baughn@das.state.oh.us or (614) 466-6072 for the Rhodes Tower drives.

According to the central Ohio Red Cross Web site, almost anyone can donate blood as long as he or she is in good health, is at least 17 years old and weighs at least 110 pounds.
