Ohio Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Commission

A 1985 Executive Order established the Ohio Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Commission. Today, through that order, the Equal Opportunity Division provides administrative support to the commission. The liaison to the commission is Bobbi Bell.

Each year, the Ohio Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Commission presents awards to Ohioans to celebrate the life of Dr. King, whose teachings encourage nonviolent actions to secure equal rights for all Americans. The next commemorative celebration will be held Jan. 17, 2008. 

The commission members include: James L. Stowe, chair (Columbus), Rep. Joyce Beatty (Columbus), Dr. Fannie Brown (Akron), Mildred E. Clark (Holland), Sen. David Goodman (Bexley), Leonard Hubert (Granville), Reverend Joel L. King, Jr. (Gahanna), José Luis Mas (Columbus), Norman McNeal (Massillon), Nanda Nair (Columbus).
