Geographic Information Systems Day
celebrated in Ohio
-- ITSD, Ohio Geographically Referenced
Information Program,
November 2003
Because of the crucial
role in government played by Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology,
Governor Bob Taft has declared Nov. 19 as Ohio GIS Day.
It is estimated that more than 80 percent of governmental functions are
associated with managing information about specific locations or geographic
areas. GIS technology can provide better decision making in all areas
of government and industry. To promote its use, the Ohio
Geographically Referenced Information Program (OGRIP) and the GIS
Support Center are focused on the planning and communication of digital
geospatial data throughout Ohio. Part of this focus is bringing GIS technology
to schools in Ohio and encouraging children and adults alike to learn
about geography and GIS.
Taft encourages participation
in GIS Day activities throughout the state.
