Ohio ties for first in Center for Digital Government survey
-- CSD Statewide IT Policy, November 2002

The State of Ohio continues to climb in the Digital State Survey, a state-by-state survey of online government services.

Ohio tied for first place with nine other states in the "taxation and revenue" category of the 2002 Digital State Survey, up from 26th place last year.

The reasons cited for the ranking included the Ohio Business Gateway, which allows small businesses to remit taxes and perform other government transactions in a single location.

The third portion of the 2002 survey was recently released by the Center for Digital Government, a California-based research and advisory group. This part of the survey also included results from the "education" category, in which Ohio ranked 14th with six other states, up from a tie for 21st place last year.

Overall, Ohio ranked 12th in the three-part survey, down from last year when Ohio tied for ninth place.

The earlier parts of the survey, released in August and June, ranked Ohio third in the "electronic commerce and business regulation" category and fourth in the "law enforcement and the courts" category. The state placed eighth and fifth, respectively, in the 2001 Digital State Survey.

Since the inception of the survey in 1997, Ohio's overall ranking has improved an average of 15 percent each year. Ohio's average ranking across all survey categories has improved 8 percent annually.

The DAS Computer Services Division's Office of Statewide IT Policy coordinated Ohio's response to the survey.
