Benefits holds smoking cessation, wellness fairs
-- HRD Benefits Administration Services, December 2002

As part of Governor Bob Taft's Healthy Ohioans initiative, Benefits Administration Services recently participated in the Great American Smokeout and held a wellness fair.

More than 170 state employees attended a smoking cessation fair held Nov. 21 in the Rhodes Tower lobby in observance of the Great American Smokeout. The fair, held in conjunction with the Ohio Department of Health, featured a variety of smoking cessation information from Tobacco Use Prevention Advisory Council, United Behavioral Health and United Health Care. In addition, smokers exchanged cigarettes for bubblegum cigarettes and had their lung capacity tested.

Smokers also were given the opportunity to sign up for a "buddy" to offer encouragement when they have the urge to smoke. Smokers interested in having a buddy can still sign up by contacting the Department of Health's Employee Health Service in the Rhodes Tower at rhodesnurses@yahoo.com or (614) 466-7478.

Another popular event was a wellness fair held Oct. 31 at the Statehouse Atrium. The DAS-sponsored event attracted more than 200 state employees.

Attendees took advantage of a variety of free health screenings and medical information. In addition to information about lifestyle management and stress reduction, the fair also offered state employees the opportunity to have their glucose levels, cholesterol levels, blood pressure, vision and body fat composition tested. There also was a demonstration of correct workstation posture.
