Shape of tomorrow's workplace focus of conference
-- HRD Office of Workplace Development, June 2002

The fourth High Performance Workplace Conference held May 23 featured keynote speaker Dr. William Pickard. Pickard, a renown educator and business leader, discussed how labor and management can work together to create a high performance workplace. The conference was sponsored by Workforce Development, a joint partnership between the State of Ohio and the Ohio Civil Service Employees Association.

It was well attended by union leadership and management. The event, held at the Columbus Convention Center, packed about 1,000 participants into 44 business tracks. This year's theme, "Shaping Tomorrow's High Performance Workplace," focused on the following five areas: the future of work in Ohio, the creation of a high performance workplace, distance learning, wellness initiatives and joint
labor-management initiatives.

"The High Performance Workplace Conference is unique in that it provides an open forum for both labor and management leaders to share experiences and perspectives on joint initiatives and the positive effectthose efforts have had on the organizations they represent and the employees supporting those organizations," DAS Director Scott Johnson said. OCSEA President Ronald Alexander said, "We have
taken a huge step in the right direction - but we have a long journey ahead to make the high-performance workplace a part of our culture."
