Citing examples of racial tolerance and non-violence, students from throughout Ohio shared their insights on the life and lessons of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the 2003 Statewide MLK Oratorical Contest.
Contestants from kindergarten through grade 12 delivered original speeches before an audience of family and friends April 4 at the Ohio Historical Center, Columbus.
Terrick Terry, Delawnte Simmons, Rachel Gather and Elise Preston, all from Columbus, were named first-place winners in the primary, intermediate, junior and senior divisions, respectively. All will be invited to speak at the Ohio Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Celebration next January.
Speakers were judged on performance and originality.
The contest
