IT Governance captures DAS
weight-loss competition

-- DAS Office of Employee Services, March 2004

An eight-week weight-loss competition among DAS divisions attracted 123 participants and media coverage.

The participants collectively lost 855 pounds.

The competition, sponsored by the DAS Wellness Team, was won by the IT Governance Division team of Mary Carroll, Eric Glenn, Michael Gluck, Kiana Hambright, Traylene Kenley, Gus Maragos, Jencie McCloud, Margaret Owens, Darren Patton, Roni Rowe, Christian Selch, Beth Stalnaker and Nadine Williams. The team was awarded the DAS "Wellness Spoon," a rotating trophy created for DAS wellness competitions, by Director Scott Johnson at an award ceremony held March 11.

The team lost 126.8 pounds, the equivalent of 4.9 percent of their initial weight. Close behind was the Equal Opportunity Division, whose participants lost 117.5 pounds or 4.83 percent. The third place team was the Administrative Support Division, whose participants lost 102.3 pounds or 4.64 percent.

The top three individuals received $100, $75 and $50, respectively, funded through a $4 fee collected from each participant. The top individual winner was Fred Zabonik of the General Services Division who lost 11.91 percent of his original weight. Second place went to Marvin Phillips, a former employee of the Office of Collective Bargaining who has since taken a job in the private sector, who lost 10.27 percent. Placing third was Wesley Lee of the Equal Opportunity Division who lost 9.43 percent.

The employee from each division with the highest percentage of weight lost, excluding the overall individual winners, received $25. They were as follows: Administrative Support Division, Dottie Fails; Equal Opportunity Division, Wiley Clodfelder; General Services Division, Anne Inman; Human Resources Division, Kimberlee Wilcox; IT Governance Division, Michael Gluck; IT Service Delivery Division, Debra Daugherty; Office of Collective Bargaining, Mike Duco.

Stories about the competition were broadcast on two Columbus television stations -- WCMH and WBNS.

Due to the popularity of the competition, a second weight-loss competition begins with initial weigh-ins April 1 and 2. A $5 participation fee will be collected at the initial weigh-in. To register, e-mail one of the following wellness team members: Gary Allbright, James Austin, Nancy Brogle, Joseph Holliman, Jencie McCloud, Kathy Teeters, Angie Weis and Dawn Wyne.
