Ohio
Business Gateway, the state's online filing and payment system for businesses,
has received one of eight 2003 Innovations Awards from the Council
of State Governments.
The awards are given to state government programs that demonstrate unique,
effective and proven problem-solving techniques that other states can adopt
to solve similar problems.
More than 40,000 Ohio businesses have signed up for the Ohio Business Gateway since the system was launched in January 2002 and made more than $341 million in payments. The system is a "one-stop shop" allowing users to report and pay sales, withholding and unemployment compensation taxes, workers' compensation premiums and report a lack of unclaimed funds via a single Internet site.
"The Gateway has grown tremendously in a relatively short time because it offers a better way to do business," Governor Bob Taft said. "It cuts paperwork, time and costs for our business customers and state agencies. It truly is an innovation that contributes significantly to our efforts to retain and attract jobs and business for Ohioans."
New features added this year allow payments by credit card and permit delayed payments as long as they are made prior to the due date. Plans are in the works for the Ohio Business Gateway to accept school district income tax payments in 2004 and municipal income taxes in 2005.
The electronic filing services needed for this multi-agency program are provided by Enterprise Shared Services in the IT Service Delivery Division with program coordination provided by Digital Ohio.
