Kasich and Taylor speak at the Ohio MLK celebration
Governor John R. Kasich and Lt. Governor Mary Taylor spoke at the 28th annual Ohio Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Celebration held Jan. 17 at the Trinity Episcopal Church, Columbus.
This free noon event recognized five Ohio individuals and organizations for their efforts to advance social change. The annual awards program recognizes the service and achievements of Ohio residents and organizations in areas consistent with the teachings and example of King. His commitment to seeking racial, social and economic justice through non-violent struggle benefited not only the victims of oppression, but society as a whole. Annual awards are intended to lift up both concrete achievements and the continuing spirit of King's dreams for this nation.
The event also featured the following winners from the 2012 Statewide MLK Oratorical Contest, which also is sponsored by the Ohio Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Commission. The winners of this April contest who spoke were Asher Reddington, Bre’Anna Walker and Assata Gilmore, all of Columbus; and Matthew Scott, South Euclid.
